Podia ter me deixado algumas fazendas...

FILIPE OF DRUMMOND
João Batista Viana Drummond was an abolitionist and progressive Brazilian businessman of the end of 19th century. He is the first and only Baron of Drummond... and he is family! In conversation with my grandparents, I discovered that I am part of the lineage of a friend of Emperor Dom Pedro II! In 1873, he hired an engineer to urbanize Princess Isabel's former Monkey's Farm as a French quarter, after a trip to Paris. He took the streetcar to the neighborhood at the time of the foundation. The boulevard has earned the name "Vila Isabel" in tribute to the princess, which would release the slaves 15 years later. In the beginning, the names of streets, avenues and squares of the neighborhood were all of people and dates related to the abolitionist movement. There is a square in the neighborhood with his name. The Baron is best known for being the creator of the Rio de Janeiro's Zoo and the "animal's game". He put a cage with a animal (tiny in size), covered with a cloth and hang it on top of the zoo's gate, and bets were made to find out which the animal was there. Part of the money raised was reversed for the purchase of more animals to the zoo and the other for the bettor. With the Republic's proclamation, the Zoo lost financial aid and Baron of Drummond turned his game into a lottery with the help of a Mexican friend, Dom Manuel Ismael Zevada. At the end of the century, the game became illegal, but did not prevent its continuation by illegal means (so far!).The biggest coincidence: he earned the title of baron in exact 90 years before my birth, after release all their slaves before the abolition of slavery! Will I am the reincarnation of this man? He could have left me some farms...
