iGeneration

Neologismo dos últimos tempos: iGeneration. Em português, a "Geração Eu". Numa época onde se fala o tempo todo em "inclusão digital", esquecemos que para isso estamos entrando num processo complexo de exclusão social.

Confesso que não sabia que existiam "Festas do iPod", ou, mais precisamente, festas sem DJ onde os convidados levam seus iPods e dançam em ritmos diferentes, trocam músicas e pouco conversam. Porém, nem precisamos pensar em tecnologia avançada para ver que a sociedade ruma para a individualização. Eu diria que essas "festas" garantem algum contato social mínimo.

Os deliverys por telefone já faziam com que as pessoas não saíssem de casa. A internet só veio ampliar esse serviço para quase todos os segmentos. Pai do iPod, o walkman já excluía seu ouvinte do mundo que passava a sua frente. O MSN e outros chats virtuais substitui a necessidade de eventos para encontrar e fazer amigos (proteção?). A realidade virtual (protagonizada hoje pelo Second life) permite que um indivíduo seja outra pessoa, tenha poderes, ganhe dinheiro e ache isso mais interessante do que a "realidade real". O videogame Wii retira a necessidade de praticar esportes coletivos ao transmitir os movimentos do jogador para o personagem virtual. E, em breve, novos equipamento farão com que pensamentos e sensações sejam também transferidos a personagens. Me parece que os filmes de ficção científica estão mais perto de acontecer do que se imagina.

Esse isolamento físico ainda traz problemas de ansiedade, descontrole do tempo real X tempo virtual, introspecção, sedentarismo, problemas de visão e audição e ainda abre a possibilidade para novos golpes de pedófilos, seqüestradores e ladrões.

Apesar do tom demasiado crítico – e até, de certa forma, pejorativo –, faço parte da iGeneration. Uso meu MP3 pra criar um fundo musical que me desliga dos meus problemas e dos transeuntes. Uso MSN, Orkut e e-mails para contatos sociais e profissionais (aliás, substituí o telefone pelo e-mail já faz tempo). Tenho minha vida controlada por um computador, porque me apego a seus benefícios. Me empolgo com a informação globalizada que muda a noção de tempo e me permite conhecer culturas, pessoas e curiosidades jamais imaginadas. Sou estimulado pelas inúmeras possibilidades de representação e criação abertas pela tecnologia.

Mas sei dos seus riscos. Sei fazer uma conta sem usar a calculadora. Tenho agenda de telefones e de compromissos com folhas pautadas e bem riscadas. Jogo bola e adoro praia. Tenho poucos, mas bons amigos. Os benefícios da iGeneration são muitos e devem ser aproveitados. Na medida certa.

Neologism of recent times: iGeneration. In an era of "digital inclusion", we forget that we are entering on a complex process of social exclusion. I confess that I didn'n know the "iPod parties", or, more precisely, parties without DJ where the guests take their iPods and dance in different rhythms, exchange music and talk a little. But we don't need to think only of advanced technology to see that society goes to individualization. I would say that these "parties" guarantee some minimum social contact. Phone deliverys had already made people stay at home. Internet had only extended this service to almost all segments. Father of the iPod, the walkman had already excluded its listener from the world. MSN and other online chats replace the need for make friends (a kind of protection?). The virtual reality (the "Second Life") allows an individual to be someone else, be empowered, make money and find it more interesting than the "real reality". The Wii videogame cut the need to practice sports collectives: it transmits the movements of the player for a virtual character. And, soon, new equipments will make that thoughts and feelings are also transferred to the characters. It seems to me that science fiction are closer to happening than we imagine. The physical isolation also brings problems of anxiety, no-control of real-time X virtual time, introspection, sedentary lifestyle, problems with vision and hearing, and also opens the possibility for new attacks from paedophiles, kidnappers and thieves. Despite the critical tone – and even negative –, I'm part of the iGeneration too. I use my MP3 to create a musical background that takes me off of my problems and passersby. I use MSN, Orkut and email for social and professional contacts (now i replace the phone by e-mail). I have my life controlled by a computer, because I'm attached to their benefits. I'm excited with the global information that changes the concept of time and allows me to know cultures, people and curiosities never imagined. I am encouraged by the numerous possibilities of representation and creation opened by technology. But I know their risks. I know how to make an account without a calculator. I have phone and commitments agendas. I play soccer and love beach. I have few, but good friends. The benefits of the iGeneration are many and should be exploited. As far right.
